Unit VII Research Paper

Instructions

Using the topic you selected in Unit IV, submit a research paper at least three pages in length, not including title and reference pages. Your research paper must include the following elements:

  • title page,
  • an introduction with thesis statement,
  • headings in the paper for the requirements listed below,
  • relevant and specific evidence, and
  • a conclusion.

You must address the following requirements.

  1. Discuss the history/background/introduction of the condition.
  2. Explain the pathophysiology or proposed origin of the condition.
  3. Describe signs/symptoms/hallmarks of the condition.
  4. Identify the available treatment options for this condition.
  5. Discuss the mechanism of action of the available pharmaceutical treatments (drug classes).
  6. Discuss new treatments in the pipeline; specifically include a minimum of one pharmaceutical being developed.
  7. In your conclusion; answer the following:

When you write a research paper such as this one, the paper should be your own work. Do not simply paraphrase material and insert quotes. You should be analyzing the outside sources to come up with your own conclusions.Your completed research paper must include at least five outside sources, one of which must come from the CSU Online Library. Adhere to APA Style when constructing this assignment, including in-text citations and references for all sources that are used. Please note that no abstract is needed.

Introduction:
For the Unit VII Research Paper, students are required to select a topic related to a medical condition and conduct comprehensive research on it. The paper should be at least three pages in length, excluding the title and reference pages, and should include relevant and specific evidence. In addition, it should have an intro with a thesis statement, headings, and a conclusion that answers certain questions. The research paper should be the student’s own work and include at least five outside sources, one of which should be from the CSU Online Library.

Question 1:
Discuss the history/background/introduction of the condition.

Answer 1:
To write about the history/background/introduction of a medical condition, the student should research its origin, prevalence, and impact on society. For example, if the condition is diabetes, the student could discuss how it has been known since ancient times and how its incidence has increased globally. The student could also discuss how the condition is a major public health concern due to its link to other diseases such as heart disease and stroke.

Question 2:
Explain the pathophysiology or proposed origin of the condition.

Answer 2:
To explain the pathophysiology or proposed origin of a medical condition, the student must research the molecular mechanisms that underlie the disease. For example, if the condition is cancer, the student should discuss how mutations in specific genes can lead to uncontrolled cell growth and spread. The student could also discuss how different types of cancer have distinct pathophysiological mechanisms.

Question 3:
Describe signs/symptoms/hallmarks of the condition.

Answer 3:
To describe signs/symptoms/hallmarks of a medical condition, the student should research the clinical manifestations of the disease. For example, if the condition is Alzheimer’s disease, the student could discuss how memory loss, disorientation, and behavioral changes are characteristic signs of the disease. The student could also discuss how physicians use imaging and other techniques to identify the stage and severity of the disease.

Question 4:
Identify the available treatment options for this condition.

Answer 4:
To identify available treatment options for a medical condition, the student must research the different modalities used to manage the disease. For example, if the condition is hypertension, the student could discuss how lifestyle changes such as exercise and diet modification can help manage the disease. The student could also discuss how different classes of medications such as ACE inhibitors and calcium channel blockers are used to treat hypertension.

Question 5:
Discuss the mechanism of action of the available pharmaceutical treatments (drug classes).

Answer 5:
To discuss the mechanism of action of the available pharmaceutical treatments for a medical condition, the student must research how these drugs work at the molecular level to modify the disease process. For example, if the condition is asthma, the student could discuss how bronchodilators such as albuterol stimulate the relaxation of muscle in the airways by activating β2-adrenergic receptors. The student could also discuss how inhaled corticosteroids suppress airway inflammation by blocking pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Question 6:
Discuss new treatments in the pipeline; specifically include a minimum of one pharmaceutical being developed.

Answer 6:
To discuss new treatments in the pipeline, the student must research the latest advances in science and technology that are shaping the future of clinical medicine. For example, if the condition is Parkinson’s disease, the student could discuss how gene therapy, stem cell therapy, and neuroprotective agents are being investigated for their potential to slow or reverse the progression of the disease. The student must provide details of at least one pharmaceutical being developed for the condition and how it works.

Question 7:
In your conclusion, answer the following:

Answer 7:
The conclusion of the research paper should provide a summary of the main points discussed earlier. In addition, it should answer the following question: What is the overall outlook for patients with the condition? The student could discuss how advancements in medical technology and research could impact the prognosis for patients with the condition. They should also address whether there are any remaining gaps in our understanding of the condition, and what further research could be undertaken. The conclusion should provide a clear and concise summary of the research conducted, including any limitations or challenges encountered.
