Nursing science has the goal of generating empirical research and conducing other methods of inquiries to expand knowledge and learn more about human experience (Fawcett, 2020). Nursing science therefore draws on several science-based theories and philosophies that can be helpful to the DNP-prepared nurse. I

find that feminist theory is very applicable to both nursing in general and to my work as CNM.

Feminist theory is useful as it focuses not only on gender or gender roles, but on the uniqueness of the individual (Rodgers, 2018). This theory calls attention to how other elements, like social, economics, power differences, and culture are factors that impact the individual realities of the person (Rodgers, 2018). It is my opinion that feminist theory is useful to nursing as it looks at the “big picture”, acknowledging how many different and complex factors have an influence on a siltation or patient.

As a DNP prepared nurse, one must look at the whole picture. The DNP prepared nurse must be able to identify the agents and patterns in a system (like in a CAS) if the goal is to make an improvement in a process, protocol, or organization. In a study conducted by MacDonald and Etowa (2021), feminist theory was applied when exploring the experiences of collaboration between nurses and midwives in a newly established midwifery practice in Nova Scotia. The goal of the study was to understand how gender, power relations, and how historical, social, institutional differences between the groups influenced collaboration between these two professions. Using feminist theory, several variables that influenced the collaboration between nurses and midwives were identified that help the researchers understand what impacted collaboration. Use of feminist theory can be useful to the DNP nurse when trying to understand the factors and complexities that influence a system as they try to learn how to best improve or change the system.

Introduction:
I completely agree with the student’s perspective that feminist theory can be helpful in nursing, especially for a DNP-prepared nurse. The application of feminist theory in healthcare can help us understand the complexities of social, cultural, and institutional factors that influence a patient’s reality. In this response, I will further discuss the importance and relevance of feminist theory in nursing practice.

Response:
Feminist theory is based on the idea of equity and the recognition of the unique experiences of each individual. It calls attention to the power differences and social, economic, and cultural factors that affect our lives. This theory is essential in nursing practice as the profession focuses on caring for patients and their unique experiences. By applying feminist theory in healthcare, we can better understand the power imbalances that impact our patients and seek to eliminate these inequalities.

A DNP-prepared nurse must have a holistic understanding of the healthcare system, including the various factors that influence it. When trying to make improvements to healthcare processes and protocols, understanding the impact of gender, power relations, and historical and institutional differences is critical. The use of feminist theory can help us understand these complexities and enable us to suggest appropriate changes.

The study conducted by MacDonald and Etowa (2021) on the experiences of collaboration between nurses and midwives is an excellent example of the practical application of feminist theory in nursing research. Feminist theory helped in identifying several variables that influenced the collaboration between nurses and midwives, such as gender and power relations. By understanding these factors, we can make more informed decisions to improve collaboration and ultimately provide better care for our patients.

In conclusion, feminist theory is essential to nursing practice, especially for a DNP-prepared nurse. By understanding the various factors that affect the healthcare system and our patients’ experiences, we can make informed decisions and seek to eliminate power imbalances and inequalities. As healthcare professionals, we must strive to provide equitable and high-quality care for all patients.
